“She fixed her body”
– Blessing CEO

“It is not that I wasn’t comfortable with my body. I just got tired of waist training”
– Zainab Bakare

this body,
spindly,
coarse to the touch,
fosters worries,
and yields to self-body shame
and pity’s pain.

this body
with the left hip
unpraised, right hip
slipped and unloved,

arranged here
and rearranged there, here,
to fit the blade of a knife
and the cynosure of all eyes
is
a
work
in
progress.

under the knife
will this body *forget*
*the size it was born to*
and get used to the size
it will later live in?
will the eyes ever recognise
what’s left of God’s work,
what’s lost
that can’t be recovered?

what’s left of this body
is a work
in progress.
