Joseph Robinette Biden Jr has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.
Biden, who defeated Donald Trump in a deeply divisive election took control of the nation which has suffered deadly blows from the pandemic and burgeoning social unrest.
The 78-year-old took the oath of office shortly before noon from Chief Justice John Roberts on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

He said: “This is America’s day. This is democracy’s day. A day of history and hope, of renewal and resolve. America has been tested anew and America has risen to the challenge.
“We’ve learned again that democracy is precious, democracy is fragile,” Biden said, a reference to his predecessor’s effort to overturn the election. “At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed.”
