As of today, Abia is the second-best in school enrolment in Nigeria. We have consistently taken the lead in WAEC examinations for the last four years while our State University has moved up in ranking from No. 99 to No. 26 and is now the second-best State University in Nigeria.

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu says his administration gives N500 to indigent pregnant women who deliver in any of the state’s primary health care facility.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, Ikpeazu boasted that “Abia State has keyed into the basic health insurance for pregnant women. If you give birth in any of our centres, you get N500.

“Delivery is free, they give you a delivery pack and N500, which is running for the vulnerable members of the society.”

When asked by the presenter what the N500 could do for the women, he said “free delivery, are you asking a poor woman what she will do with N500? Some people don’t have it.

“At least it will pay their way back home.”

The governor said the state operates a free delivery policy and a N500 take-home package as an initiative of the basic health insurance for pregnant women.

Recall that resident doctors in Abia State have been on strike following the non-payment of their salaries for 22 months.

Recall also that in October, the Joint Action Committee of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) shut down operations at the hospital. The state-owned polytechnic is also on strike.
