Tension as gunmen kill police sergeant in Owerri

There was tension in Owerri on Wednesday as unknown gunmen shot and killed, Loveday Obilonu, a police sergeant at Okwuuratta in Owerri North local government Area.

The sergeant who until his death was attached to the Department of Operations of the Police Command headquarters in Owerri, was shot dead by the gunmen and his corpse found lying in the gutter.

It was, however, evacuated to Aladinma morgue in Owerri by his family with the aid of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Orji Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to sources, he was accosted in his Highlander SUV by the hoodlums, who on seeing his police rifle, shot him dead.

They took his phone and made away with his rifle, as well as the Highlander SUV.

A short video posted on the internet showed a lady identified as Loveday’s wife crying over his death.

A family source, Val Okara said his killing was suspicious, adding that his two phones were also taken from him.

He said: “I suspect that my younger cousin was assassinated because no less than five bullets were released on his head. He was shot dead inside the gutter, raising suspicion that it might be an assassination.

“He was my very beloved cousin. He was married with four children and I am pained about his death because he left a very young family.

“I am his marriage godfather. He had a very loving wife and I do not know what his wife and children will do now. This is indeed very regrettable.

“An unexpended bullet was found inside the gutter where his corpse was lying.

“There is every suspicion that it was a murder incident. The murder case has been incidented at the Orji Divisional Police headquarters.”
