Ekene Mbegbu, a South African returnee has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Anambra.
Mbegbu, popularly known as Ochiagha Ozubulu and Ekene Onye Egwu was killed on May 4 in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state at about 11:30 pm.
It was gathered that the Pretoria, Gauteng Province resident was shot dead near Micheal junction in Ozubulu.
Sources said nothing was taken from him after he was shot and killed.
His friends and associates took to social media to pay tribute to him, describing him as a good man who had helped so many people in South Africa.
Another associate, Isidore Chima said he was implicated in the August 6, 2017 shooting at St Philip’s Catholic Church which left 12 persons dead and 27 others injured.
He said: “He is a wonderful soul. He helped me get another passport after I lost my passport in South Africa. We became good friends,I visited his office at Jankende gate 4 years ago we discussed it so well.
“When his family from SA came to the US two years ago, he contacted me to help them with accommodation “hotel”.
“Ever since the Ozubulu church massacre, they’ve been looking for him. They implicated him in that massacre and seized his Nigerian passport, but finally, the court sets him free. Ken should’ve stayed back in the US”
Ikenga Tochukwu, the public relations officer of the Anambra State Police Command told standardobservers that the command was aware of the murder of the South African returnee.
According to him, the command has launched an investigation into the matter with the aim of arresting the culprits.
