Nigerian soldiers on Saturday blocked the ever-busy Onitsha head bridge following the declaration of a sit-at-home by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
This is as five soldiers were killed by gunmen who attacked a military checkpoint at Ihiala along the Onitsha -Owerri Road on Friday night.
The blocking of the head bridge which links travellers with Asaba to the West caused heavy traffic both at the Onitsha and Asaba axis, with Commuters lamenting over the development.
An eye witness said the gunmen, who came in an SUV car on Friday, fired at the soldiers and destroyed their operational Hilux vehicle parked at the checkpoint.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Ikenga Tochukwu who confirmed the incident said it happened at about 8.40 pm on Friday. Ikenga could, however, not confirm the number of casualties as he had not received the detailed report.
Following the blocking of roads by the soldiers in the state, people coming into or travelling out of Anambra State were stranded.
Soldiers also blocked the Amansea border town between Anambra and Enugu states, causing heavy traffic gridlock in the area.
Also, at the Mgbidi axis of the Onitsha-Owerri Road, soldiers blocked the road to traffic, forcing vehicles to divert into the communities in search of an alternative.
