An estate surveyor Mr. Nwuyi Asor has told the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry that he lost his sight due to brutality and torture meted out to him by police officer of the Rumuolumeni Police station.

Asor stated that men of the Nigeria police force at the Rumuolumeni stopped him during his early morning exercise at Akpoki junction on May 18th 2020, bundled him into their police van with an allegation of being a suspect.

He particularly accused one police officer, Barisi among the police team of using baton to hit his right eye which led to the lost of sight of that particular eye.

He stressed that life has become unbearable for him since the incident as he could no longer practice his profession over six months now.

“On 18th of May 2020, on my usual way of sports on Saturdays at Rumuolumeni, on my way doing sports, as I was passing, I saw police people before I knew it, what I heard was ” arrest him, beat him up, arrest him put him inside the car”.

“I said oga, why are you beating me like this, I am a graduate, I am an estate surveyor, moreover I was Man-O-War commander at Rivers State University for over three years, why are you beating e like this.

” They said they should arrest me, they should beat me, that I am a suspect, they tried to force me into the car. In the process of beating me one of the police officer, Barisi from Ogoni was the one that beat me up and used baton to hit my eye and I lost the sight of my right eye.

“As you can see, I have lost my sight on this side and I have not practice for over six months now, I have not been going to work. I was in the hospital for over three months. He later realised himself, came to beg I told him I can’t listen to you”

Asor emphasized that he has spent millions of naira to restore his sight but to no avail and appealed to the commission to ensure that Justice prevails.

He demanded ten million naira as compensation to be paid to him.
