The Rivers State House of Assembly has received and is considering a petition demanding the immediate impeachment of Nyesom Wike as governor of Rivers State.

The petitioner is demanding for Wike’s sack over waste and reckless use of taxpayers’ money.

U.S. Uchendu in the petition addressed to the office of the Speaker, urged the assembly to, as a matter of urgency, commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Wike as a direct consequence of the high spate of impunity in the way taxpayer’s money is spent by the governor.

Uchendu cited sections 120 and 121 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), stressing that Governor Wike had no right to spend state funds outside the manner prescribed by the State House of Assembly.

He said that the governor had upon the receipt of the N78 billion refund from the Federal Government resumed reckless spending of the state’s funds.

Wike had in first half of this year, donated N500 million to Sokoto state. He also made a donation of N600 million to Akwa Ibom teaching hospital.

Part of the petition reads: “I have carefully read co-jointly sections 120, 121, 122, 123 and 124 of the said constitution and did not find anywhere where the apex law gave powers to the governor to lead his people into enormous poverty through unsolicited expenditures in the form of cash gifts, instead of wealth.”

Standford Oba, the clerk of the assembly said the petition had been received and had been tabled before appropriate quarters.
