Cattle traders on Thursday, attacked members of the Rivers State Taskforce enforcing the closure of the Slaughter market, wounding eight, including three police officers while a police officer and a Taskforce operative were feared dead.

There was heavy shoot out around the now demolished slaughter market at Oginigba, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State between the traders and Taskforce team.

The shooting started when some cow dealers at the former slaughter market challenged the demolition of the mosque and shops within the old slaughter market.

Sources said a police officer and a Taskforce operative was killed in the attack.

Recall that the Rivers State Government had in August announced the removal of the Oginigba slaughter market from its present location saying it was building an ultramodern replacement at a different location at the Rumuolumeni area, still in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The government also said the market has become a beehive of criminal activities.

The shooting which was said to have lasted for hours between the policemen attached to the Government task force on the demolition of structures at the site of the old slaughter and the cow dealers who were said to be resisting the mosque which is the only structure still standing around the vicinity.
