Pirates kidnap five in Rivers

An undisclosed number of persons have reportedly been attacked by sea pirates on Bonny waterways along the Onne area of Rivers State.

It was learnt that the passengers, who were travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt on Tuesday, were attacked by the pirates, while five persons were kidnapped.

Confirming the incident, a statement by the press secretary of Bonny Local Government Council, Chapp-Jumbo Wisdom on Friday, said that one of the abducted passengers is a student of the University of Port Harcourt.

According to the statement, “Intelligence reports from the security agents confirm that on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, passengers travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt were attacked by sea pirates on the Bonny waterways along Onne.

“The report also confirmed that some persons were abducted. Three (3) yet to be identified persons, Mr Oluwatosin Toyin Ajemosun and one Mr Isaac Jumbo a fresh student of the University of Port Harcourt and an indigene of Bonny.

“The security agencies including the Marine police are at the moment investigating and carrying out a massive search.

“In her reaction to the situation, the Bonny Local Government Chairman, Dame Hon. Anengi Barasua Claude-Wilcox who regrets the unfortunate incident is urging residents to remain calm as the government is working closely with the security agencies to ensure that order is restored and abducted persons reunite with their families soon.

“She further calls on residents of Bonny to reach out to the security agents or the office of the Executive Chairman with any reliable information that will aid the investigation. The war against insecurity along the Bonny waterways and its adjoining creeks remain a priority for this administration.”
