Residents of Ohafia Local government area of Abia State have decried the constant harassment and intimidation by the Nigerian military, calling for government’s intervention as it is affecting their businesses and livelihoods.

Recall that a clash between hoodlums and soldiers last week resulted in the death of six persons, including soldiers and some of the hoodlums.

Soldiers later invaded Amangwu community, burning down houses, shops and vehicles. A commercial motorcycle operator was also killed during the invasion.

Speaking on the complaints by the residents of the LGA, Okorafor Okorafor Ukiwe, the council boss confirmed it has received further complaints of intimidation, harassment and stifling of the constitutional freedom of movement and right to do legitimate business of the people.

He, has however, advised Nde Ohafia to remain calm as efforts are ongoing to resolve and pacify the situation.

The Chairman further advised the youths of Ohafia to allow the military to perform their constitutional duties and stop pelting them with objects to avoid aggravated responses. He also advised that the military stop the practice of needless humiliation of innocent and law-abiding citizens through compelling them to raise hands and other dehumanizing acts.

Furthermore, the Chairman enjoined all Eze Ogos, Autonomous Ezes, youth leaders and all Communal Improvement Unions to urgently control the influx of unknown persons to their communities and be accountable for the peace and security of their communities.

He also advised the public to disregard the fake news of reported casualties until government or security authorities make a clear statement on the matter.
