The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack on soldiers stationed around the Zuma rock area of Abuja.

The terror group disclosed this in a statement released on Saturday.

Recall that the Thursday night attack targeted a checkpoint mounted by soldiers of the Presidential Guards Brigade, an elite Army unit in charge of protecting the capital and the President.

The attack is part of ISWAP’s expansion into new locations outside its stronghold in the Northeast.

A similar ambush of the elite army unit in the Bwari area of Abuja led to the death of about nine soldiers.

The attacks come a few weeks after the jailbreak in the Kuje area of the capital city.

The group has also attacked police officers in Suleja, a town in Niger State which is less than 50km from the heart of Abuja.

ISWAP has also claimed responsibility for detonating improvised explosive devices and carrying out attacks in Kogi, another state that borders the federal capital in the north-central region.
