INEC creates additional 1,235 polling units in Imo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the suspension of the physical registration of voters in Anambra State but says that online pre-registration continues.

Mahmood Yakubu chairman of the commission made the announcement on Monday in Abuja at the 3rd quarterly meeting with leaders of political parties.

Yakubu explained that the decision was to enable the commission to prepare for the November 6 governorship election.

He said the commission would, in the coming weeks, resolve claims and objections, clean up the data, print the PVCs for collection by registrants and compile the register for the 5,720 polling units.

Yakubu assured that newly registered voters in the state, including those who applied for the replacement of damaged or lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), would have their cards ready before the election.

The chairman told parties fielding candidates that they would get a copy of the voters’ register on October 7.

In week 11 update of the nationwide CVR which commenced July 26, Yakubu said as at 7am on Monday, September 6, a total of 2,729,819 fresh voters had completed their pre-registration online.

On the nationwide physical registration at INEC state and local government offices, the electoral chief announced 717,947 Nigerians had completed the process.
