Gunmen raid Ebonyi village, burn houses

Gunmen on Monday attacked Ebele village in Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local government area of Ebonyi State, burning several houses.

The number of casualties has not yet been confirmed as of the time of filing this report but sources said the attackers invaded the village and burnt down many houses.

The sources said some victims of the attack sustained various degrees of injuries while vehicles and motorcycles were also burnt.

Mr Stanley Okoro Emegha, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Internal security and border peace, said he was told that the attackers, came from Agila community, a border community between Ebonyi and Benue State.

Emegha said that there was confusion on whether it is herdsmen that attacked Ebele village or Agila people who had an age-long communal clashes with Ngbo community.

He revealed that soldiers who was deployed to the area stopped the attackers after engaging them in a gun battle for some hours.

According to Emegha: “Some said it is Agila people while others said it is Fulani herdsmen, but we don’t know the actual people that carried out the attack. We can’t say exactly what happened, this is what happened in the night and we heard about it this morning.

“Nobody died yet. We have called the chairman and commissioner, nobody has said 2 or 3 people died but we shall still find out.

Agila community and the Ngbo people have for a long time been engaged in communal crises.

Aliyu Garba, the state Commissioner of Police, said that he has drafted his men to the area to quell any possible breach of peace and to forestall any break of law and order.
