Although there have been different accounts of the number of officers killed, sources say naval personnel have invaded the area as a back-up force, creating panic within the populace who fear reprisal by the navy.
Residents of the area expressed fear that the navy may return to carry out a scotch-earth raid on the area.
The public relations officer of the Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochi did not immediately respond to enquiries for comment.
However, a naval officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the development, adding that the incident has caused widespread anger in their base.
