An Ethanol production factory located at Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu State, has been accused of polluting Nvuna river located in Nkanu East local government area of Enugu State.
The company, D-HAP Enterprises Services Ltd allegedly disposed off toxic waste into the river which destroyed the aquatic life of the river and killed fishes.
The river is the major source of water for domestic activities in communities of Nomeh, Unateze, Mburumbu and Nkerefi.
Enugu state government through the special assistant to the Governor on Water Resources, Anthony Dubem Onyia and the MD of EN-RUWASSA, Frank Omeje, visited the River on Thursday for a fact-finding mission as directed by governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
The team established that there was contamination of the river through the discharge of effluent which destroyed all living organisms in the river including fishes.
They added that the water body emmited some odour.
Onyia said the governor is concerned and committed to addressing the issue, as well as mitigate the challenges residents of the communities are facing.
He advised the people of the communities to avoid water from the river as the state government is already considering emergency interventions such as drilling of boreholes for the affected communities prior to the river cleanup exercise, among others.
He also disclosed that state government will constitute further sanction as soon as laboratory test and more contact tracing are completed.
