Enugu community hails ESN operatives for intervening during attack by Fulani herdsmen

Residents of Adani community in Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu State have hailed operatives of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, for intervening during an attack by Fulani herdsmen in the area on Sunday.

Standard Observers reported that six persons were following a clash between armed herdsmen and residents of the area.

It was gathered that herders shot two persons while taking a stroll in the evening while the third person, a member of Igga community was shot his farm while herders blocked sympathisers from taking him to the hospital.

However, the protests by the residents of the community over the refusal of the herders to allow the wounded farmer to get treated attracted members of ESN to the scene.

Community sources said ESN operatives shoot the three armed herders dead, while those who ran to a nearby mosque for safety were equally shot dead and the mosque burnt down.

According to the sources, the ESN operatives who stormed the area on motorcycles started shooting at those barricading the farmer from being taken to the hospital.

An eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the area has become a hot-bed for attacks by herders who destroy farm crops and kill, main residents.

He said they had earlier encountered the ESN operatives in the bush who told them that they were not after law-abiding citizens.

The killing of the herders sent panic into the Northern community in the area who began disappearing for fear of being targetted.

The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ndukwe, who accompanied the CP, Mohammed Aliyu on to the area confirmed the incident.
