A 66-year-old Retired Principal, Sunday Bakorson, has demanded justice and a compensation to the tune of two hundred million naira for the raiding and burning down of his only property, including his certificate and that of his children, in Nweol Community, Gokana local government area, by police officers led by CSP Omoke Cletus and SP Albashiru.
Bakorson told the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Police brutality that on 5th July, 2020, on his way back from palm wine tapping, he met a team of Police Officers at the bush track led by the DPO Bori Division.
He said that they accosted him and demanded to know where he was coming from, which he told them he was coming from his palm wine tapping business.
According to Bakorson, the DPO collected the keg of palm wine and drank it all without paying him money.
“The DPO demanded I take him to where the bad boys are, I told him I don’t know anything about miscreants’ hide out, that I am only going to tap my palm wine. They said I should go. Around 4pm to 6pm that same day, the Police set my eight bedroom flat ablaze, all my labour for thirty-five years, was destroyed in a twinkle of an eye.
“My certificate was burnt, my two children who are graduates, their certificate in the house were equally burnt. Where do I start from at this old age, I am demanding two hundred million naira as compensation for all the loss”
