Unknown gunmen have attacked a police checkpoint in Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra State, killing two police officers and a commercial tricycle operator.
The incident occurred early on Sunday at about 9:15 am at the Ukaegbu Junction, Eziweka Raod, Awada.
The operational vehicle of the police team was set ablaze by the gunmen who fled the scene after the attack.
The killing created panic in the area with video footages of the incident posted on the Internet showed residents running for their lives.
Ikenga Tochukwu, the public relations officer of the Anambra police command could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
