Argentina qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup with victory over a Poland side who will join them in knockout stages after edging out Mexico on goal difference.

Mexico earned their first win of the tournament by defeating Saudi Arabia 2-1, but it wasn’t enough as their goal difference was inferior to Poland’s by just one goal.

Up until Salem Al Dawsari’s 95th-minute strike for Saudi Arabia, it had looked as though second place in Group C would be settled on disciplinary points, given Poland and Mexico were level on both points and goal difference. Poland would have gone through via that method in any case, having accrued five yellow cards to Mexico’s seven in their three group matches.

The results mean that Argentina will face surprise package Australia in the last 16 after the Socceroos’ shock win over Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark. Poland will take on the world champions France, who themselves suffered a surprise loss aginst Tunisia
