Staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra State, have pledged their support for the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.
They equally drummed support to the Anambra Central Senatorial Candidate, Senator Victor Umeh and other candidates vying for various elective positions under the LP platform in the state.
A lecturer in the Department of English Language and Literature, NAU, Prof. Chike Okoye, while fielding questions from journalists, after meeting with LP candidates led by Umeh, in Awka, yesterday, said the NAU workers are ready to deliver victory for the party candidates at all levels in the forthcoming general elections.
He argued that any worker in Nigeria is a registered member of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), which formed the Labour Party.
According to him, the meeting organised by representatives of the four Academic Unions in Nigerian Universities, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), was to brainstorm on how to ensure victory for LP, describing it as a great party.
He said the joint ticket of Obi-Ahmed has all it takes to address failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government at the centre. He insisted that Nigerians envisage a new country, which will bring back our lost glory and usher in prosperity, peace and unity.
“LP is our own constituency. We are all members of NLC and TUC that gave birth to the party.
“We all support Obi-Ahmed, Umeh and all other LP candidates, because we believe they have the competence to resolve the insecurity, education, economic and other socio-political challenges confronting the country,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of other LP candidates, Umeh said the party was still consulting with concerned stakeholders, including academic communities, who understand the issue at stake in the country.
