Dave Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State, says he will present a social media regulation bill to the state assembly.
This is as he has urged the youths to stay away from social media unless it is for the benefit of their lives, family and church.
Umahi stated this during a service on Sunday at the Christ Embassy Church, in Abakaliki.
He said that social media has become a platform for the propagation of rumours and propaganda.
Umahi lamented the social media-engineered rumor about the coming back to life of his deceased former Commissioner for Infrastructural Development and Concession, Fidelis Kings Nweze.
The rumours created pandemonium in the state last week Wednesday, a day the governor declared as public holiday in honour of the late aide.
He said: “So we need to be very careful. I am coming up with a law in the state. If you propagate news that will bring anybody down or escalate a crisis, you will be arrested and tried.”
“See this social media, try to run away from it unless it is for the benefit of your life, your family and the Church”
On his late aide, he said: “I am very proud of the young man. In a society where people pay evil for good done unto them; in a society of betrayals; in a society where young men are no longer interested in hard work, that young man excelled in everything
“So we continue to pray for the family and the state. We lost quite a lot. He was handling not less than ten (10) different projects. There were no complaints.”
“I have become the father of the family till eternity and I will stand by the family even when I leave office because of the life he lived”.
