No less than three persons have been killed as soldiers and gunmen exchanged fire in Anambra on Wednesday.
The gunmen were said to have been attempting to rob a Zenith bank branch at Umunze-Owerri Ezunaka Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, when they were confronted by soldiers on patrol.
A staff of the bank who spoke on the conditions of anonymity said that the soldiers engaged the gunmen leading to the death of one of the gunmen and two of the soldiers.
When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that there were shootings within the area but said details are still sketchy. He said that the operations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, one person has been reportedly killed on Tuesday at Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government during an attack by gunmen.
It was gathered learnt that the gunmen attacked a Police checkpoint at Ngige Estate area, along Y-Junction, causing panic among residents and traders in the area.
Eyewitnesses said no less than two persons sustained bullets injury while one person died in the incident.
The State Police PRO, Ikenga said that “Yesterday, 27th September, 2022 at about 2:30pm in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi LGA, Police Operatives averted a kidnap incident.
“The victims were rescued and the Lexus jeep recovered.
“Operations is still ongoing and further development shall be communicated.”
