Terrorists ambushed vehicles conveying over 40 passengers travelling from Sabon Birni Local Government Area in Sokoto State on Monday.
Some of the passengers including children who were travelling from the town of Sabon Birni to the town of Isa near the Nigerian border with Niger were then burnt to death.
Police spokesperson Sanusi Abubakar said several others are being treated in a hospital for severe burns.
Although another account suggests the number of those killed is around 50 but police are yet to state casualty figures.
Some reports said the attackers deliberately set the vehicles on fire burning the occupants alive while another account indicates the fire ignited on the buses as a result of the attackers’ gunfire.
An official involved in evacuating the casualties described the scene as horrendous and that most of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.
Sokoto State Police Command said they are investigating the circumstances of the attack.
