No less than seven persons have been killed in Awka, the capital of Anambra State as cultists and vigilante groups clashed on Monday evening.

There were heavy shootings around miracle junction before UNIZIK gate at Ifite Awka as the cultists who were armed to the teeth attacked and killed vigilante operatives.

Eyewitnesses told Standardobservers that many of the vigilante operatives managed to escape with several gun injuries while their official sienna vehicle and another Toyota Camry were set ablaze.

The vigilante operatives regrouped and retaliated, killing at least three of the rampaging cultists at the Aroma axis of Ifite.

A security source said the rampaging cultists belonging to the Aye cult group were retaliating against the killing of their colleague simply identified as Ali.

The source said Ali was killed by the vigilante operatives in March during a confrontation.

According to him, “Awka should expect more cult killings. They have made plans to kill many secret agents and are forcefully recruiting small boys into cultism. Awka town must make security strong because Ali’s men are back in the town and are ready to kill”.

When contacted, Ikenga Tochukwu, the public relations officer of the Anambra State police command told Standardobservers that the command was aware of the shooting in Akwa.

He said the command had sent a tactical police squad to the area to restore calm.
