Residents protest as erosion claims 30 lives, houses in Onitsha

At least 30 persons have died due to the menace of erosion in Omaba community in Onitsha, Anambra State, residents say.

The residents who took to the streets to voice their concerns about the issue on Wednesday, also said several houses and other properties had been washed away by erosion in the area.

The residents who blamed the erosion menace on an abandoned contract in the area, called for the federal and state governments to come to their aide.

They said that when the contractors came to execute the project, they were excited, but to their shock, the contractor disappeared after some time while initial pillars erected have equally been eroded by flood.

They said they have lost uncountable numbers of vehicles, buildings and human lives to the erosion. They added that they do not know where else to run to.

One Chief Christopher Okadigwe, said he lost his four-storey building to the erosion, adding that the scope of the menace increases every day.
