Anambra State police command has arrested Mbazulike Iloka, the suspended Transition Committee chairman of Nnewi Local Government Area for allegedly beating his wife, Chidiebere to death.
The deceased died on Sunday morning after sustaining several injuries to the head.
The husband in his account said she slumped and died , a claim that is being disputed in some quarters by friends and family of the late Mrs Chidibere who had earlier reported several cases of domestic violence and a repeat of same on Sunday morning.
The family insisted that an argument ensued that morning, an aftermath of the event they attended the previous day where the deceased rebuked her husband over his infidelity.
The family said that there were serious deep bruises and cuts on her head, forehead and cheek areas which were consistent with torture.
Mr Iloka was later suspended through a letter from the Office Of Honourable Commissioner Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs on Friday.
The letter read: “Following the sad and sudden of your wife late Mrs Chidiebere Iloka on the 7th of August 2022, there has been a massive public outcry over the circumstances leading to the cause of her death, including alleged possible homicide.
“While you are presumed innocent until the completion of investigation, it has become imperative that you should step aside to allow unfettering investigation and Justice.
“Consequently, you are to step aside and hand over the affairs of the Local Government administration not later than 12th August 2022 until further notice”.
Ikenga Tochukwu, the public relations officer of the state command confirmed that Mr Iloka had arrested and investigation into the murder has begun.
He said he arrest followed a petition by Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA to the Inspector-General of Police, Baba Alkali.
