A group of traditionalists and their masquerades on Saturday disrupted a funeral ceremony in Oruk Anam, Akwa Ibom.
The traditionalists had claimed that the deceased identified as Ndem was their member whose burial should not be conducted by his church.
Eyewitnesses said that the masquerades thereafter, took over the corpse of late Ndem when it was to be interred to mother earth.
According to them, the deceased who they claimed was their member will be buried according to traditional rites and not according to Christian rites.
The invasion caused pandemonium in the community as those who had turned up for the burial scampered for safety for fears of break down of law and order.
Members of the Christian group also took to their heels.
Mr. Essien Harrison, an eyewitness said the scene was chaotic.
According to him: “History was made today in Oruk Anam, Akwa Ibom State as masquerades disrupted funeral of one of their members conducted by a Christian Church.
“Church members had to take to their heels for safety, with the masquerades taking over, having a field day to perform funeral rites for their colleague.”
