The Osun State Election Petitions Tribunal sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the July 16, 2022 gubernatorial election on Friday.

After canceling hundreds of polling units previously won by Mr Adeleke due to over-voting, the majority of the three-judge panel reached its decision. Mr Adeleke’s victory was supported by a minority judge.

Former Governor Gboyega Oyetola was declared the election winner, handing over the government house in Osogbo to the All Progressives Congress from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Mr Adeleke’s lawyers are said to be preparing an appeal, which is expected to go all the way to the Supreme Court.

Mr Adeleke dismissed the ruling, calling it a “miscarriage of justice” and promising to restore the people’s mandate.

“I urge our people to maintain their composure. “We will appeal the decision, and we are confident that justice will be served,” the governor said. “Let our people know that we will do everything in our power to keep this widely acclaimed mandate.”
