Mob burns down station after shooting of three soldiers by police

A group of soldiers were fired on by police officers on Friday, resulting in the death of one soldier.

Two other soldiers identified as Dantani Bako, a lance corporal and private Samuel Gambo were shot on their legs by the rampaging police officers, Peoples Gazette reports.

The injured soldiers were involved in counterinsurgency operations in the North East.

It was gathered that the police officers opened fire on them during an argument at the Nakuse-Kuje checkpoint.

“They were stopped by the police at Nakuse checkpoint… One of the police officers broke their motorcycle headlight and it led to a misunderstanding between the men. One among the police officers shot both soldiers in their legs.” a military source said.

The soldiers were said to have been rushed to a medical facility in the neighbouring Kwali community for treatment.

“Lance corporal Bako later died in the hospital. Private Gambo was referred to a specialist hospital in Gwagwalada for further treatment,” the source added.

It was gathered that the Nakuse police station has since been incinerated by an angry mob in protest of the shooting.
