unmen invade Ebonyi community, kill score, burn houses

At least fifteen persons were killed on Tuesday after gunmen said to be from Effium in Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State raided Omege Community in the same LGA.

Local Sources said over 10 other persons were abducted by the gunmen during the early morning attack while five houses were burnt.

Sources said the clash was due to the lingering disagreement between Effium people and Ezza branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers over who would collect revenue in Effium Motor Park.

In January, clashes in the area led to the death of over 45 persons while properties worth hundreds of millions were destroyed.

The clashes were reportedly fueled by a local government chairman and an assembly member who represents the area.

The locals have consistently slammed the Dave Umahi-led state government for its lack of will to put an end to the crisis.

According to them, the crisis has claimed the lives of over 150 persons in the LGA.

The state government had in the heat of the crisis in January arrested several masterminders of the violence.

Over 55 persons were arrested during a mop exercise by the police with victims of the crisis expressing hope that justice would be done in the matter.

However, they were later released with a charge to go and make peace after a series of protests by some influential members of the Effium community.

Loveth Odah, the state’s police command public relations officer, when contacted, said she had not been briefed on the incident.

But a senior police officer who did not want his name in print because he was not authorised to speak, said more than fifteen bodies were recovered and deposited to the mortuary.

He said, however, that the area commander in charge of the crisis-ridden zone had dispatched a team of officers to curtail the violence.
