Gunmen on Thursday attacked a continuous voter registration center belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC at Nkwo Ihitte, Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State.
The gunmen attacked the centre around 1:30 p.m, killing a security guard. They also destroyed machines used by the staff of the commission to register voters.
Eyewitnesses told Standardobservers that the gunmen numbering over 15 shot sporadically into the air, forcing those who had gathered to register to scamper for safety.
The eyewitnesses said those who could not run, especially women who had their children with them, laid on the floor as the gunmen destroyed properties to be used for the exercise.
A video made available to Standardobservers showed the gunmen screaming that they do not want election. They added that the attack was a warning as they would be monitoring the area.
A staff of the commission who spoke on the conditions of anonymity told Standardobservers that the experience was very traumatising.
He added the gunmen carted away the computer meant for the exercise and other sensitive materials.
He said: “we were in the middle of the process when they came. They shot sporadically. Those outside who saw them on time took to their heels. But some of us could not run because they had already surrendered us.
“The security guard was shot dead. He was among those who ran away initially but came back to carry the computer used for the exercise and they shot him and went with it. It was very traumatising”
