Four herders killed after gun duel with unknown gunmen in Anambra

Fulani herdsmen on Sunday ripped open the stomach of a pregnant woman in Mgbuji community, Ehamufu town of Isi Ụzo local government area of Enugu State, killing her, her husband and son.

Chinyere Ede, her husband Japheth and son were killed in their farm settlement during a raid by the herdsmen.

Six others were killed during the attack, including Ogbuabor Joseph Udoka, a graduate of Michael Ọkpara University of Agriculture.

The attack on Mgbuji comes Less than fourteen days after herdsmen butchered 12 farmers in Opanda farm settlement in Nimbo community, Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu State.

Standardobservers gathered that the herders attacked the villagers from the Benue State borders on Sunday, wiping out the family of Japhet Ede.

Recall that On May 28th, herders killed nine persons in the same community while another attack on a neighbouring community left no less than five persons dead.

Daniel Ndukwe, the public relations officer of the Enugu State Police Command said he had not been briefed on the attack, promising to get back to our correspondent.

Residents of the area who spoke to Standardobservers said that they are at the risk of being wiped out, adding that despite informing local authorities of the threats of attack issued to them by the herdsmen, nothing was done about it.

A youth leader Umaji Okey said that the only option left for them is self-defence.

He said: “We’re almost being wiped out and the government is doing nothing about it. They bring their cattle and destroy our farms but when farmers try to push them out, they will be killed.

“The number of farmers killed this year alone from this community is more than 50. In May, a similar attack took place.

“Despite informing relevant authorities of the threats issued by herders before the attacks, nothing was done. We will resort to self-help,” he said.
