Five members of the Anambra State Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the Anambra State Government to probe into incidents of Police brutality and other atrocities have resigned.
Mr. Chijioke Ifediora and Mr. Osonwa Chukwuka, both lawyers who represented the five members said they resigned because government is playing games and “they don’t want “to be pawns in the game of the government”.
They said that government obviously didn’t mean to address the injuries suffered by Nigerians under Police brutality given its lookwarm and lack of seriousness.
Their spokesman Ifediora said for instance the panel of enquiry ought to have resumed on January 14 but up till now it is yet to.
He also said that information hardly flows in the panel as members were kept in the dark as for its activities.
Because of its lack of seriousness, members are inundated with phone calls from members of the public who are anxious to know what was going on.
“Every day we wake up to numerous calls asking when the panel was not sitting and whether we were being used by government. There was no government response for not resuming after one month. It certain government is playing games.”
This is so sad, they said knowing that the panel received the highest number of petitions, 310 against the police and even though the time frame for submission of petitions and complaints against the police was extremely limited.
They added: “We are now convinced beyond peradventure that the Anambra State government has no regard for the victims of the many human rights violations by the police in the state.”
“The government has totally ignored the panel and had simply set up the panel to play to the gallery.”
The members that resigned apart from Ifediora and Chukwuka were: Henry Chibuike Ugwuanyi, Comrade Ebelechukwu Ngini and Comrade Kas Chibuike Obiwuzie.
