The Management of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State on Wednesday, urged residents to come and claim hundreds of abandoned corpses at its mortuary.

It also threatened to give the corpses mass burial within two weeks from today if their relatives and friends fail to come and claim them.

The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Achonu Hacinta, told newsmen that so many corpses have overstayed at the hospital’s morgue without identification.

The management called on those who may have missing relatives to visit the hospital mortuary as the limited space is filled with corpses whose address or relations are not known.

“Families whose relatives are missing are requested to come and identify and claim the corpses within two weeks”, it said.

Achonu maintained that corpses not collected within the stipulated period would be given mass burial.

Recall that at the height of the crisis in Owerri and surrounding Local Government Areas, hundreds of persons were killed extra-judicially by security agents in the state.

Amnesty International put the figures at over 150 but Intersociety, an Onitsha-based civil society organization said more than 500 persons were killed by security agents while over two thousand were arrested and detained at different cells in Nigeria.
