Eight killed in Anambra lorry accident

No less than eight persons, mostly roadside hawkers were feared dead in Awka as a lorry conveying cattle rammed into vehicles at the Kwata traffic light.

According to eye witnesses, the lorry, with registration number ‘Plateau JJNN-59YZ’ lost control of its speed and rammed into more than five cars waiting at the traffic light on Friday afternoon, ABS reports.

The traffic point is where tens of hawkers gather to make brisk sales during traffic stops.

Eyewitnesses said the occupants of the lorry also died in the crash.

It was gathered that about five cars involved in the mishap were damaged beyond repair, while bodies of the dead and injured have been taken away by men of the Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.

However, irate youths set the lorry and its contents ablaze.
