Enyimba FC on Sunday defeated Libyan club Al Ittihad 2-0 in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup playoff round tie in Aba.
First half goals by Sadiq Abubakar and Victor Mbaoma gave Enyimba a 2-0 win against the Libyan side.
Abubakar struck in the 21st-minute and Mbaoma doubled the Elephants’ lead 13 minutes later to hand them control of the tie ahead of the return fixture. The visitors ended the game with 10 men after a late red card.
Enyimba failed to score more goals despite completely dominating the game.
The overall winner of the contest will proceed to the group stages of the competition
Sunday’s encounter was supposed to be the deciding leg of the fixture but the first leg failed to hold last week after Enyimba were left stranded in Morocco and denied entry to Tunis – the venue of the first leg – over local Covid-19 regulations.
CAF was forced to postpone the fixture but the African body has yet to announce a date and venue for the encounter.
Whenever and wherever the fixture holds, Enyimba will head into it confident of advancing to the group stage of the competition.
