The Anambra State Fire Service has averted a petrol tanker explosion on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway around Ugwuoba Garki Market, Enugu State.

The parked petrol tanker fully loaded with petroleum products attracted sun heat and started evaporating flames from leakage at the top of the tanker.

Confirming the incident, the chief Fire Officer, Anambra State Fire Service, Engr. Martin Agbili said that the state fire service received a distress fire call involving a parked petrol tanker evaporating flames at the Ugwuoba axis of Enugu/Onitsha expressway at about 1100hrs (11 Am) on Oct. 28 and immediately officers and firemen in fire equipment moved to the scene to rescue the situation.

Agbili said that the cause of the evaporating flame on top of the tanker was caused by leakage and overheating but thanked God that the flames have not gotten to the main petrol tank, therefore, it was easy to quench the flames and water down heat temperature on the tanker.

He thanked individuals who called the attention of the fire service to the scene, highlighting that the call helped in prompt response and timely rescue of the situation and no life was lost.

“We are in the dry season and things are highly combustible so we should be mindful of how we handle flammable liquids at this period,” Agbili concluded.
